I am generally interested in the ecological and evolutionary drivers of biodiversity. I take a systems biology approach to study biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, eco-evolutionary dynamics, and host-microbiome interactions. My work uses experiments with microbes and plants, combined with field observation, genomic and transcriptomic analysis, and quantitative methods.
Key topics of my research include:
The influences of temporal and spatial dynamics on community assembly
The fitness impacts of microbial eco-evolutionary interactions on hosts
The ability of environmental changes (e.g., warming, pollution, nutrient enrichment) to mediate host-microbiome interactions.
Xiaojun Allen Liu
Allen’s research focuses on microbial carbon use efficiency, plant–microbe interactions, and soil biogeochemistry under global change. He integrates genomic tools, stable isotope probing, and field experiments to uncover how microbial traits and community dynamics regulate soil nutrient cycling under climate change.
Yifeng Cao, Ph.D. Student
Yifeng studies meta-analysis and eco-evolutionary dynamics experiments. She is passionate about understanding species interactions and biodiversity. Yifeng is harnessing techniques from machine learning and lab experiments to complete her projects. She is also teaching an undergraduate general biology lab (BIOL 1209L).
Jada Daniels, Ph.D. Student
Jada's research focuses on the effects of habitat fragmentation on plant-microbe interactions in aquatic ecosystems. She mainly works with duckweed and other aquatic plant species. Her research consists of both lab and field experiments. She is currently teaching an honors biology lab course focused on habitat fragmentation and the effect it has on duckweed growth (CURE BIOL 1503L).
Xiyan Feng, Ph.D. Student
Xiyan's research primarily focuses on understanding the ecological dynamics between hosts and their microbiomes, and how these interactions shape ecosystem functions and biodiversity. I aim to elucidate the environmental factors that drive host-microbiome relationships and their implications for ecological communities.
Zhijun Mavis Ding
Zhijun/Mavis is an undergraduate student at Denison University double majoring in Biology and Data Analytics. Mavis has research experiences on local adaptation of milkweed, eco-evolutionary dynamics in microbial communities, and duckweed microbiome.
Reetu Shrestha
Reetu is an undergraduate student majoring in Biology at Louisiana State University. She is currently researching the phenotypic evolution due to divergence adaptations found in SBW25 and PBR716 Pseudomonas fluorescens.
Adam Tarleton
Adam is an undergraduate student at Louisiana State University, majoring in biochemistry with a minor in chemistry. His goal is to attend medical school and become a doctor after college. He has a strong passion for working in labs, as it enables him to engage in hands-on experimentation and deepen his understanding in specific areas of study.
Ananya Pathak
Ananya is an incoming junior at Lousiana State University. She is a biology major on the pre-medicine track. She is planning to planning to pursue medical school after graduation.
